When Developers go too far.

[ Edited ]

This was something that was brought to my attention that I think has a direct correlation to a issue discussed alot on these boards, User Created Ranked Rooms.

Below is a post by the Developer of Warahwk, Dylan Jobe, concerning a decision made by his company to remove a certain feature in an attempt to eliminate stat padding. The actual issue isn't important. In this case it has to to with allowing team switching.

What is important is the response by the developers, and then their realization that their "solution" was innappropriate.

Warhawk Community,

We have been watching the debate over the past few days regarding our decision to block Team-Switching. While there are compelling arguments for both pro and con perspectives, we have ultimately decided that removing individual player freedoms, to help protect against stat-padding was, ultimately, the wrong thing to do.

So...

As of right now, a fix is rolling out to *all* Blue-Ranked-Official SONY servers. This fix is being distributed as we speak and does not require a client-side update. The fix could take several hours to update all the servers so you may find yourself playing on a server that allows team-switch and then join another server that does not. This is expected behavior until the fix is fully deployed to all servers.

If you are a player that wants to play on a server with Team-Switching still blocked, you can. This fix is*only* rolling out to official servers. You can always join or host your own Dedicated Ranked or Player Ranked server as these configurations will still honor the "no-team-switch" from the v1.3 patch.

We hope this solution will act as a good compromise and one that the Warhawk Community supports!

As always...Rock on!

This perfectly expresses the tough choice developers have in deciding between letting players play a certain game how they want to, and a developers responsibility to "protect" the larger comunity from a small number of rank uppers and abusers.

The Warhawk developers, after taking some time to think about the issue, came to the conclusion that they had in fact made the wrong decision, and that letting players experience a game how they want to was more important than punishing stat padders.

Hopefully Slant Six will do the same.

I think Slant Six lost sight of what their intentions were.

They wanted a perfect game.

It couldn't happen.

They can deliver a damn near perfect game, and thats all we ask.

Re: When Developers go too far.

The real irony of your post is this...

The Warhawk Developers watched a debate happening for a few days, made a decision, informed the community and let it be.

The problem with this game is they take forever to roll out changes and don't really keep us in the loop.  Sure once a month they let us know what they are working on, but the communication with the community is just horrible.

And I don't want to hear that Sony ties their hands $h1t.  Sony allows other game developers to communicate more, why would they treat this game be any different.

So, from my perspective, your post simply points out that other game developers have better interaction with their communities.

I do enjoy this game, and slowly but surely, /6 is making it feel more like a real SOCOM game.

I am a Manager for a Logistics Company and I understand what it's like to have to make tough decisions.  But one thing I do know, the longer you let things drag and the longer you take to make a tough decision, it just becomes that much more difficult of a decision to make.

Re: When Developers go too far.

Warhawk and socom are two diffrent games made by two diffrent developers. Just because the developers of warhawk think that idea is good, doesnt mean you can bring it here and act like Slant six did something wrong.(even though this whole game is wrong).    Team switching is a good idea and bad idea because it requires an even round count instead of odd. One of the bigger changes in socom that people didnt really notice but it does screw a lot of things up.

Who wants to win a game 4-4 and the only diffrence is a kill assist or something stupid like a teamkill. Which also brought another change in socom where people are now supposed to kill themselves so theres no bomb planted.... such a joke

At the very least... we'd just like Slant Six to say something.  Type with those fingers.  Use that keyboard and tell us something on the blog.  Even a "No, there will be no custom ranked rooms!" is better than not saying anything at all.

Exactly we just want to hear something. Thats all most of the veterans have been asking for! COMMUNICATION builds lasting partnerships between game maker and player.

I think you missed the point of the post.

My post has NOTHING to do with team switching. I simply used that as an example of how developers can sometimes go overboard while trying to "protect" a player community from stat padders and rank uppers. In this instance the feature was team switching. In our case, it's user created ranked rooms.

In both cases the developers made a decision that affected player freedom. The difference is that the Warhawk developers recognized their mistake and took steps to correct it.

Re: When Developers go too far.

But that's the thing - they haven't even apologized or explain why their game was released so poorly. What would compel them to say anything else?

I'm not discounting your post, because you make a worthy comparison; it's just the reality of what we expect to receive.

it all depends on the way the contract is set up for each individual game.  obviously Sony (SCEA) has a lot more control over what /6 does than other developers.  this is probably because Sony said "you guys are new, so we call the shots" whereas other developers have more chips to bargain with.

talk about misunderstanding the point.  they're not talking about switching teams halfway through a game.  they're talking about being able to switch teams in the lobby.
